Book of Jude is also the name of a person, Jude. Few enjoy the sound of alarms. Some people disconnect buzzers intended to remind them to buckle their seatbelts, just to avoid irritation. Others unhook smoke detectors that seem to go off too easily. Ignoring such reminders and warnings can be perilous to health. But ignoring spiritual warnings can be worse. That's why we should pay attention to this book. In a few short words, Jude sounds an alarm we dare not disconnect. Jude was Jesus' half-brother and brother to James, who is also believed to have written another important letter in the New Testament. The letter was written because Jude was concerned that Christians might be drawn away from the truth by slippery teachers of false doctrine. He wrote to urge believers to contend for the faith (v.3). At the time of writing, strange teachings were travelling through some of the churches. Christian imposters had begun assuming roles of leadership. They were teaching that it really didn't matter how people lived if they genuinely had been saved by grace. Sin meant nothing, they reasoned incorrectly, to those who had been forgiven of sin. Though the book is brief, don't miss its powerful impact and colourful imagery. Watch for its direct warnings and God's tremendous promises that accompany them. |
